It's Short Story Sunday!

What Really Matters

As  his phone rang as he stood from the table, sliding it out of his pocket he had a different problem to worry about as he answered.

“Hello Jade.” Jade Shannon, his worst mistake.

“Surprised you kept my number, so sweet of you.”

“You know how terrible I am about throwing out trash, what do you want Jade?” there was shuffling on the other end of the line, finally a voice that made Luka’s heart stop spoke.

Luka couldn’t think of anything to say. He was suddenly twelve again, suddenly back at that place, with those people, with him.

The red haired boy, Eric, was nice. Possibly the nicest person he had met in the wolf pack.

“I-I uh I got Furret, what about you?” Luka asked.

“I-I got Gengar, didn’t you want Gengar?” He had four Gengar cards. In truth Luka wanted the Charmander Pokémon card, he was so much like the little lizard, but Luka said “yeah s-sure.” The boys played for hours swapping cards and talking about the latest Pokémon episode.

The strained voice broke his reverie.

“H-Hey Luk, I’ve seem to have gotten myself into some trouble…I need your help, c-could you come to our old stomping grounds?”
